California medical waste disposal is regulated by the California Department of Public Health, the Medical Waste Management Program of Sacramento County, and federal regulations.
We understand the importance of compliance with the California Medical Waste Management Act (MWMA). With regulations that differ depending on the classification of waste generated, staying compliant can be overwhelming — especially for smaller practices without a dedicated compliance officer.
That's where Eco Medical comes in.
We are California's medical waste experts. We understand the regulations around generating, handling, collecting, transporting, and disposing of medical waste — and we help our Sacramento clients stay ahead of inspections, not scramble to prepare for them.
We offer free compliance audits to any Sacramento healthcare facility. We'll perform a walkthrough of your facility, review your designated accumulation area, verify container labeling and segregation practices, and ensure you're operating in full compliance. We also perform waste audits that can reduce the volume of regulated medical waste your facility generates — lowering the amount you pay per pickup.
Designated Accumulation Area: All biohazardous medical waste must be stored in a secured, designated accumulation area labeled with a biohazard warning sign legible from at least 25 feet in both English and Spanish, as required by the MWMA.
Sharps Waste Disposal: Must go into a rigid, puncture-proof sharps container that is sealable and clearly labeled with "Sharps Waste" or the word and symbol "BIOHAZARD." Sharps containers must not be filled past the ¾ full line. Once sealed, they can be placed inside your biohazard bin alongside other biohazardous waste.
Biohazardous & Pathological Waste: Must go into a red biohazard bag (no more than 3 pounds) which is tied to prevent leakage and placed inside an approved, lined biohazard container. In California, pathological waste and biohazardous waste must be segregated and their respective containers properly labeled as "Pathology Waste" or "BIOHAZARD."
Pharmaceutical Waste: Non-hazardous pharmaceutical waste must go into a non-hazardous pharmaceutical container labeled "INCINERATION ONLY." These containers must be secured to protect contents from unauthorized access. Hazardous pharmaceutical waste (P-listed, U-listed, and D-characteristic drugs) must be managed under RCRA regulations.
Storage Time Limits: Medical waste generators in Sacramento must arrange for pickup within 7 days of accumulation unless they have a storage permit allowing up to 90 days. Eco Medical helps you set the right pickup frequency to stay compliant without overpaying.
